"I have come to the conclusion that I must continue my work as attorney general," she said in a statement. "There are a number of important investigations and cases that are underway, and I intend to finish the job. I am running for re-election (as Attorney General) to complete the work New Yorkers elected me to do."

James' decision comes as reports surfaced earlier Thursday that the Democrat is seeking to get a deposition of former President Donald Trump as her office investigates potential financial fraud committed by the Trump Organization.

New York Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs called the suspension "selfless" amid a tough year for Democrats ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

"I think she understands how difficult a year 2022 is going to be for Democrats," he said. "This is selfless for her to put her party ahead of her own preference."

James, who announced her candidacy on Oct. 29, was expected to be a formidable challenger against Gov. Kathy Hochul.

As of a Tuesday Siena College poll, Hochul maintained a wide lead over James and other Democratic contenders — though the governor and James had nearly identical favorability ratings.
