The 43-year-old Wyandanch man, Almalik Keller, threw glass bottles and cans at, punched, kicked and stomped on his wife at a smoke shop on Sept. 17, 2021 in an incident that was captured on video, officials said.
Bystanders at the store helped the woman into the rear driver’s side door of her vehicle after the attack. Keller was in the driver’s seat when his wife was helped in. He got out of the vehicle and slammed the door on his wife’s left leg before driving away with her in the car, court documents show.
The victim suffered multiple injuries including a black eye and two lacerations to her scalp that required stitches. She also had a broken leg and underwent two surgeries to install two permanent steel plates on both sides of her left leg.
Later that same night, Keller was arrested after trying to escape on foot and fighting with an officer when cops approached his vehicle. His wife was in the back seat covered in blood and screaming. Cops were able to subdue Keller with a taser.
“Justice has been served and this should send the message that domestic violence cannot and will not be tolerated in Suffolk county,” said District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. “I hope today’s sentencing gives the victim a sense of closure and security in knowing that the defendant can no longer cause harm to her or anyone else.”
Keller was found guilty of assault in the first degree after a trial. Along with the 25-year prison sentence, Keller was sentenced to 20 years of post-release supervision and concurrent sentences for assault in the second degree, aggravated criminal contempt and resisting arrest. The victim was also issued an order of protection against him.
