ELMONT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Residents claim the quality of life has gone downhill in Elmont since the opening earlier this month of the new UBS Arena.

Residents claim people are parking on sidewalks and urinating on their lawns and cars after leaving the venue.

"It's been total chaos, you know, people are constantly blocking my driveway, I saw two girls literally sleeping on my lawn, most of them are drunk," said one resident who recently purchased a home near the arena. "They are constantly here honking."

"Terrible and disgusting, really. This community has been disrespected with these people coming around and doing what they think they can do in this neighborhood," said resident Bob Barker.

"A lot of signs that were up saying you can't park from one point to another are missing. They were there days ago and now they're missing," another resident said. "They're actually removing the signs."

Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages said the problem is the Town of Hempstead's street signs allow anyone to park after 4 p.m. in most cases and she is now pushing to implement resident parking only in the area.

"They had said that the people had to be impacted before this goes through, well people are impacted so let's move, let's get this done," Solages said.

A spokesperson for the town said in a statement that it is in the process of "strengthening and expanding parking restrictions" near the arena.

"In addition, the town remains in contact with law enforcement, as well as state and arena representatives and urges members of the community to immediately report illegal activity to the Nassau County Police Department," the spokesperson said.
