New movie about Gilgo Beach murders to premiere Saturday on Lifetime

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A new movie about the Gilgo Beach murders is set to premiere Saturday night on Lifetime.

"The Long Island Serial Killer: A Mother’s Hunt for Justice" stars Kim Delaney as Mari Gilbert, mother of Shannan Gilbert, whose disappearance in 2010 launched the investigation into the still unsolved serial murder case on Long Island.

According to a relelase from Lifetime, the movie follows Mari Gilbert's search for the truth and also "digs deep into the murders, including Shannan's."

The movie will premiere at 8 p.m., followed by the airing of the A+E documentary, "The Long Island Serial Killer: Special Report."

The Gilgo Beach serial killer has yet to identified and the case remains unsolved.

The remains of 10 people, including a toddler, were found along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach in 2010 and 2011, but not all have been identified. Some of the remains date back to 1995 and investigators have previously said all of the victims are somehow connected to the sex trade.

The investigation began as a hunt for Shannan Gilbert, a Craigslist escort from New Jersey who police say went missing from a client’s house in Oak Beach on May 1, 2010.

She was last seen running in terror into the night from some unseen danger.

The investigation into her disappearance led to the discovery of the first set of remains in December 2010. Gilbert's remains would not be found until a year later.

Mari Gilbert was stabbed to death by her daughter, Sarra, in 2016 without ever getting answers about Shannan's death. Sarra Gilbert was convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The Gilgo Beach murder case was the focus of a 2020 film titled "Lost Girls," based on the book "Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery" by Robert Kolker.
