Man arrested after bicyclist, 58, was fatally struck by turning box truck in LIC: police

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police arrested a man after a 58-year-old bicyclist was fatally struck by a truck attempting to make a turn on a Queens street Wednesday morning.

Officials responded to a 911 call of a bicyclist struck on the intersection of 47th Street and 47th Avenue in Long Island City at approximately 8:35 a.m. on November 3.

Upon arrival, officers observed Qiang Tu unconscious and unresponsive with trauma and body, authorities said.

EMS transported the man to Elmhurst Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the NYPD said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2015 Freightliner M21 Box Truck, operated by 33-year-old Shakai Waye of Newark, was traveling westbound on 47th Avenue and attempting to make a right turn onto 47th Street when he struck the bicyclist who was also traveling westbound on 47th Avenue in the same direction.

The vehicle remained on scene and Waye was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operator.

An investigation remains ongoing.
