Man shot by Newark police, another in custody in 'suspicious' vehicle investigation

NEWARK, N.J. (WCBS 880) – New Jersey officials are investigating a police-involved shooting that happened during an investigation of a suspicious vehicle Tuesday morning, authorities said.

According to a preliminary investigation, a police officer approached a car that was reported as a suspicious vehicle in the rear of a house on Lyons Avenue near Parkview Terrace in Newark, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II announced.

As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly attempted to use the car as a weapon and the officer responded by firing at the vehicle, Stephens added.

One man sustained multiple gunshot injuries and was transported to University Hospital, officials said.

A second man who was also in the vehicle was taken into custody.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
