NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A panhandler stabbed a 76-year-old man who didn't give him money at the Herald Square subway station in Midtown on Sunday night, police said.

The victim was in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital on Monday after the stabbing at 11:30 p.m. in the station at West 34th Street and Sixth Avenue.

The suspect asked the victim for money on the "unpaid side" of the mezzanine to the B, D and F lines, police said.

The victim declined to give him cash and walked away, but the man followed him and stabbed him in the stomach, according to cops.

The victim stumbled out of the station for help and was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue with life-threatening injuries.

No arrests had been reported as of Monday, and police haven't released a description of the suspect.
