NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Commuters who use MTA’s OMNY tap-and-go payment system for more than a dozen single-fare trips in a seven-day period will automatically be upgraded to an unlimited weekly pass next year.

The new “fare-capping” policy would start on March 1, pending approval from the MTA board, “with the goal of giving our customers an even easier, more convenient way to ride,” according to transit officials.

The MTA said the new policy would automatically charge customers a flat rate of $33 if they take 13 of more trips using OMNY during a one-week period (starting at midnight on Monday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday).

The $33 charge is the same cost as taking 12 trips during a seven-day period, the MTA said.

“With this pilot program, you’ll always pay the lowest fare each week, no matter how many trips you take,” the MTA said in a press release. “Plus, you don’t have to pay upfront for an unlimited 7-Day MetroCard, making it an easier, more equitable way to pay your fare.”

Riders can track their progress toward reaching unlimited rides on the OMNY website, where more detailed trip history and information is also available.

The MTA board is scheduled to vote on the proposed “fare-capping” policy on Wednesday.

If approved, the plan would take effect on the same day that the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad will resume charging peak fares during business rush hours.

For those riders, the MTA has already introduced a new 20-trip ticket to help them save 20% off peak-fares using the MTA eTix app.

MTA officials noted that if LIRR and Metro-North commuters are not ready to commit to a monthly pass, they should consider the 20-trip ticket instead.
