Vroom was a 17-year veteran of the department and assigned to its Third Precinct. A funeral Mass for him was scheduled to take place at O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place on Monday morning.

Police union officials said Vroom began his career with the NYPD and worked in the city’s response and recovery efforts after the 9/11 terrorist attacks 20 years ago.

“Officer Charles Vroom died as he lived, a hero who placed public service ahead of any concern for personal safety,” said Michael Spadaccini, the union’s president.

“His death, a mere day after the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and his own participation in the recovery efforts, highlights the ever-present danger inherent in policing and stands in testament to the heroism of sacrifice in the line of duty,” Spadaccini said.
