NJ man, 29, who posted selfie videos during Jan. 6 Capitol riots found guilty

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- A New Jersey man was convicted on Monday of four federal crimes for posting selfie videos of himself during the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol.

A jury trial in Washington, D.C. found 29-year-old Hector Vargas Santos of Jersey City guilty of entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building, violent entry and disorderly conduct in a capitol building, parading, demonstrating, or picketing in the Capitol Building.

A sentencing date for Vargas Santos was not immediately available.

He tagged himself on Facebook as being “at United States Capitol,” on the afternoon of the attacks and posted a photo of rioters as they scaled an exterior wall with the caption: “WE THE PEOPLE TOOK OVER THE U.S. CAPITOL. #HOLDTHELINE.”

Vargas Santos, who was seen wearing a Trump 2020 hat was also seen saying “We took over this f***ing Capitol, tell them,” in one of the videos he posted.

Santos was arrested on Jan. 19, 2021 after federal investigators were informed of the videos on Jan. 7 from a Jersey City community group.
