NJ woman who lost friends on 9/11 running her 2nd NYC marathon in their memory

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A New Jersey woman who lost friends and colleagues in the Sept. 11 terror attacks will be running this year's New York City Marathon in their memory.

A delay getting to work saved Kellie Roe Kenny's life on 9/11.

"I got stuck in traffic, I unfortunately witnessed the attacks," Kenny told WCBS 880's Marla Diamond in a recent interview.

She watched in horror, knowing friends, colleagues and mentors from Cantor Fitzgerald, the firm she once worked at, had no way out.

"It's still really hard to talk about," Kenny said.

Her husband convinced her to run the marathon that year in their memories.

"I wore a Cantor Fitzgerald hat, I dedicated each mile to those that were lost by writing their name on these small flags and then attaching the flags to my body," Kenny told Diamond. "At that time, I so much wanted people to know who they were and what their story was and run for them."

Two decades later, Kenny is back to run her second New York City marathon. The event comes just weeks after the nation marked 20 years since the attacks.

Kenny said she's very grateful to be able to run, especially after a bad bout with COVID-19 that disrupted her training.

"It's going to be another amazing New York marathon for me to be able to run with everything that has happened in the past year and a half, and over the past 20 years," Kenny said.

Yet again, Kenny will wear the names of her friends, who she said she thinks about every day.

"They'll be with me, for sure. There will be a lot of reflecting, and there always is," Kenny said.
