The state reported 12,484 new virus cases Tuesday, just over 200 more than the day before, while the positivity rate actually rose a bit, up to 9.64% from 7.84% on Sunday.

Just under 130,000 tests were reported Tuesday — a far cry from the nearly 400,000 noted on the state’s virus report less than two weeks ago.

Hospitalizations rose by just over 50 people in the latest report, but remained under 10,000.

Gov. Kathy Hochul denoted that statewide hospital admissions related to COVID-19 are down over 25% over the past week, and have decreased by over 32% in New York City.

At the omicron’s worst, hospitalizations were over 12,600, with the positivity rate more than double what it is now.

Deaths related to the virus, though, have remain in the triple digits daily for the past three weeks. Tuesday’s report showed 158 new deaths.

Hochul announced Tuesday that over 14 million COVID tests will be sent to state schools by the end of the current week in her bid to keep kids in schools. She said two tests would be given to every K-12 student ahead of their upcoming winter break.

The governor, though, expressed disappointment in vaccination numbers among the most recently approved age group — kids 5-11. She pointed out that just 26% of those in that age group has completed the vaccine series. That’s over 42% less than that number of fully vaccinated kids 12-17.

On the nursing home front, Hochul said 200,000 more tests will be sent to New York facilities this week. She also heralded a 30% drop in virus cases in nursing homes.

New York City, which once had an average cases per 100,000 residents above 400, has now fallen down to about 116. Long Island now has the lowest figure statewide at just 94 cases per 100,000.
