NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Department of Education announced on Thursday it will integrate Asian-American history curriculum into history classes at all New York City public schools.

A pilot program will start at select schools this fall, and the department aims to expand to every school by spring 2024.
The curriculum will cover topics like the Chinese Exclusion Act, the lives of immigrant laborers and the establishment of ethnic communities in New York City.
Asian New Yorkers faced a dramatic increase in hate crime violence during the pandemic.
The DOE said the program aims to combat the hateful ignorance that fuels racial violence.
“This is especially important in light of the most recent and ongoing hate crimes and violence against members of our AAPI community,” Schools Chancellor David Banks said at a press conference, “One of the ways we combat racism and hate… is by teaching and learning about each others’ stories and histories.”
The program will draw on the $200 million federal stimulus package that former Mayor Bill de Blasio set aside for curriculum modernization efforts.
