NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An off-duty NYPD lieutenant was arrested for drunk driving on Saturday morning after he crashed his vehicle into a parked car, according to police.
Lt. Donald Stewart, 43, was arrested around 4:53 a.m. in the 81st precinct and charged with driving while impaired by alcohol, officials said. Police refused to say where exactly the incident took place, but the 81st precinct covers Stuyvesant Heights and parts of northern Crown Heights.
This was at least the second time Stewart has been caught drunk driving.
NYPD disciplinary records show Stewart was punished in April 2014 after an internal probe found he drove “under the influence of an intoxicant,” refused to take a breathalyzer test and “consumed an intoxicant to the extent that said officer was unfit for duty.”
After the 2014 incident, the department put him on dismissal probation for a year, suspended him for 64 days, docked 16 vacation days and ordered he submit to breath testing and counseling.
It’s unclear whether this new drunk driving charge will have any impact on his employment.
Stewart has been on the force since 2001 and has worked for the Queens South Narcotics Bureau since January 2021. He was paid $212,000 last year.
