NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A New York-based group is trying to keep morale high among police officers and members of the military in these days when thanks may not be obvious.

"Operation Gratitude is the largest nonprofit in the country for hands-on volunteerism in support of our military, veterans, and first responders," CEO Kevin Schmiegel told WCBS 880's Mike Sugerman for this week's Difference Makers.

The group recently stopped by the NYPD's 108th Precinct in Long Island City where they handed out goodie bags to officers.

The bags, which were packed the day before by dozens of volunteers, were filled with snacks, hand sanitizer and most importantly "thank you" notes from the community.

“We’re including for every precinct, for every police officer, thousands of letters of appreciation and support,” said Schmiegel.

Out of all the items the officers received, the kind notes meant the most.

“It’s nice to know that we’re being appreciated still,” said Officer Lauren Pagan.

“Very seldom do we get the 'thank yous' any more," said Officer Kenny McLaughlin. “You know, we joined this police department, none of us really wanted to be famous or rich, and it's just the little acts of service and the thank yous that we get along the way that really make it worth while."
