SOUTHEAST, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — PETA is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for abandoning a severely injured dog on the side of a Putnam County road.

According to the Putnam County SPCA, a male Mastiff/American Bulldog mix was found lying on the road near the intersection of Sodom Road and Brewster Hill Road in the Town of Southeast at 4 a.m. on Sunday.

The SPCA says a good Samaritan found the dog and transported him to the Guardian Veterinary Specialists 24-hour animal hospital nearby.

Upon examination, veterinarians found the dog was severely underweight, has severe dental disease with masses inside his mouth, overgrown toenails, swollen paws, an “extremely large untreated anal mass with necrosis” and a broken jaw.

“This dog’s body was rotting away for lack of veterinary care,” said PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien in a statement. “PETA urges anyone with answers to come forward so that whoever left him to suffer in so much pain can be held accountable.”

The Putnam County SPCA is investigating this incident.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Putnam County SPCA Law Enforcement Division at 845-520-6915.
