NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – This week, Gov. Kathy Hochul lifted the indoor mask mandate for businesses while Gov. Phil Murphy announced that New Jersey will do away with the school mask mandate.
While COVID cases in the Tri-State area continue to decline, the pandemic is still not over. With unpredictable variants, such as delta and omicron, rearing their heads over the past few months, however optimistic local leaders may be, there’s no guarantee these lifts will remain permanent.
On this week’s episode of WCBS 880 In Depth, reporter Peter Haskell sits down with New Jersey Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli, and asks about the timing of the decision. The two also discuss what the new normal could really look like.
Quoting author Mark Twain, Persichilli says, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes.”
“We're going to [continue] to see surges, and then we're going to see things calm down. And then we might see surges again,” she admits, “We have to learn more about COVID 19 [every day]. And we do learn something new every day. And we have to be prepared for surges and variants. But we also have to live our lives.”
