IN DEPTH PODCAST: NY's Health Commissioner weighs in on the pandemic

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – It’s been two years since COVID-19 surfaced, spread, and forced the whole world to come to a screeching halt. That’s two years of masks, two years of canceled plans, and two years of watching ones we know and love get sick.

Nearly 1 million Americans died from the virus, and that number is still growing. Nevertheless, there appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel. As the number of people catching the virus decreases, restrictions are also being rolled back all across the nation.

With the possibility of another variant - and subsequent surge of cases - arising, will we ever fully distance ourselves from the virus?

On this week’s episode of WCBS 880 In Depth, reporter Peter Haskell sits down with New York State Health Commissioner Mary Bassett to try and understand where the world is at now, as well as where it’s headed.

“Right now, we are in a very good place,” says Bassett. “We’re watching the numbers and we will be vigilant. COVID taught us about living with uncertainty, and about being prepared to use what [we’ve learned].”
