BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Hundreds of people descended on a dead-end street in a Long Island town for a mansion party this week that never happened thanks to quick action by the police.

Between 300 and 400 people showed up early Monday morning to Hawkins Lane in Brookhaven ready to party at a 5,000-square-foot home that looks like a mini castle.

Neighbors saw the cars lining up and called police, who broke up the party before it could even begin, said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

Newsday reports many partygoers were still in their cars when the police rolled in.

Authorities say a New Jersey resident rented the home on a 10-acre property for the purpose of throwing the massive party.

"I think it's very important that people understand and the message is clear that we're not going to allow people to skirt the COVID-19 public health rules by simply renting a home and thinking that you're going to be able to get away with that," Bellone said Tuesday.

Indoor and outdoor gatherings at private residences are limited to no more than 10 people in New York.

The homeowner is cooperating with authorities.

"We have gotten significant cooperation from the homeowner who when they found out that the home was being used for this purpose did report that to th epolice and we will be focusing, and we will be holding accountable the people who did hold this party, who rented the home," Bellone said.

The host faces a possible nuisance charge and fines of up to $15,000.
