NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Primary Day in New York has officially come to an end and results are coming in across a number of races, including in the mayoral race.

Results are expected to be slow after the implementation of ranked-choice voting (a system that lets voters rank up to five candidates instead of choosing just one) in all city elections, but officials had promised tentative winners would be announced shortly after polls closed.

Among the most closely watched races is the competition for New York City mayor, New York City Comptroller and Public Advocate, as well as races for borough presidents.
Guardian Angels founder and longtime radio talk show host Curtis Sliwa, who was endorsed by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, was the projected winner of the Republican mayoral primary in New York City, the Associated Press reported Tuesday night. He defeated businessman Fernando Mateo.
In the crowded Democratic field, Andrew Yang conceded in the race for mayor about two hours after polls closed as he fell far behind in early returns, which showed Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in the lead followed by former city sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia and former de Blasio administration lawyer Maya Wiley.
"You all know I am a numbers guy... and I am not going to be the next mayor of New York City based upon the numbers that have come in tonight," Yang told supporters. "I am conceding this race, though we're not sure ultimately who the next mayor is going to be, but whoever that person is, I will be very happy to work with them."
Most City Council districts are also up for grabs and Democratic voters in Manhattan will also be choosing a nominee for district attorney, who will inherit an ongoing investigation of former President Donald Trump.
Eight people are vying to be the next Democratic candidate in the district attorney race. The winner will face off against criminal defense attorney Thomas Kenniff in November. Alvin Bragg was in a close race with Tali Farhadian Weinstein.
Because it is also technically a state election, ranked choice voting will not apply to the race.
AP projected that incumbent Jumaane Williams would win the Democratic primary for the city's public advocate.
There are also primaries in the New York suburbs, including for Westchester county clerk, the county legislature and locally for mayor and council seats. Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, who has been buffeted by personal and political scandals, lost her race for a third term, coming up short in the Democratic primary against City Councilman Malik Evans.
