NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Andrew Giuliani, the son of former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney and former mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani, says he is “heavily considering” running for governor of New York.
“I plan to run,” Giuliani told the Washington Examiner on Wednesday.
Giuliani, 35, is no stranger to politics and most recently worked as a top aide for Trump during his presidency.
The 35-year-old would likely run as a Republican, which could put him against incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has repeatedly said he plans to seek a fourth term despite dual scandals involving alleged sexual misconduct and handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes.
While Cuomo has denied any wrongdoing in both situations, the governor has kept a low profile in recent weeks amid calls for his resignation.
Recent polls also show a majority of New York voters do not want to governor to seek a fourth term, which would open the playing field to a number of candidates.
Still, Giuliani tells the Washington Examiner that he feels he has a strong chance at victory.
“Outside of anybody named Trump, I think I have the best chance to win and take the state back,” Giuliani told the outlet.
“And I think there's an opportunity in 2022 with a wounded Democratic candidate, whether it's going to be Gov. Cuomo, whether it's going to be a radical [New York State Attorney General] Letitia James, whether it's going to be a no-name lieutenant governor, I think there's a very, very real chance to win,” Giuliani added.
A former Trump aide already confirmed to the Washington Examiner that “Trump and the Make America Great Again movement will back Giuliani.”
