NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Sen. Chuck Schumer on Sunday again called for stronger federal gun laws, a day after a shooting in Times Square wounded three people, including a 4-year-old girl.
Schumer said what happened in Times Square on Saturday evening was a “horrible, horrible thing.”
“And it’s very bad for New York. Times Square is one of the major tourist attractions of the world,” the senator said in midtown Sunday.
He said he’s in the process of trying to drum up Republican support for more stringent gun laws.
“We’re hopeful that can happen, they’re making some good progress,” Schumer said.
A bill to enact universal background checks has passed the House, and Schumer said he intends to put it on the Senate floor shortly.
“Ninety-five percent of the crime guns used in New York state come from out of state,” Schumer said. “So until we have a federal law, we’re not really going to be able to stop the awful flow of guns into this state.”
“You can go to another state and just buy guns with cash or a check and come up here and sell those guns, use those guns, etcetera,” the senator said.
At least one person of interest was still being sought by the NYPD in Saturday’s shooting, which happened in the heart of Times Square. All three victims—the girl and two women—were hospitalized and are expected to survive.
