NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — America is seeing another surge in COVID-19 cases, especially in areas where vaccination rates remain low.
The cases are being driven by the Delta variant, which was first found in India and has now become the most dominant strain in many parts of the U.S. and around the world.
As the cases continue to surge, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has even reversed course on its masking guidance and is again recommending all Americans – including those who are fully vaccinated – wear masks in indoor settings in areas with "substantial" or "high" coronavirus transmission.
In this week’s 880 In Depth Podcast, we look into Americans’ views on inoculations, vaccine hesitancy, the rise of the Delta variant, instances in which fully vaccinated people are contracting COVID-19 and more.
Joining us this week is Dr. Celine Gounder, an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist who served on the Biden-Harris Transition Advisory team on the pandemic. We also speak with the Chairman of Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, Dr. Theodore Strange, who has been following the rise of the virus in one of New York City’s COVID hotspots.
