Police have arrested and charged Javier Oates, 19, with murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm in connection with the shooting of Ethan Holder outside the 77 Mini Market on M Street near Utica Avenue in Flatlands at around 2:50 p.m.
Police said that after the shooting, Oates allegedly fled in a dark sedan.
Emergency responders rushed Holder to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he died Wednesday.
The victim was a Department of Education employee, officials said. Schools Chancellor David Banks released a statement saying one of the department’s employees was “senselessly” shot at random.
“I am absolutely heartbroken and outraged that one of our dedicated employees was senselessly a victim of random gun violence,” Banks said. “Our educators, our students, and our families deserve better than living with the threat of gun violence. I am in contact with the school’s principal and will ensure that the students have the counseling services they need as they grapple with this tragedy and will be working with the NYPD to increase security around the school.”
Another teenager — a 17-year-old girl — was fatally shot hours earlier in Queens late Monday night.
