NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Thousands of residents across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut lost power on Monday as a major winter storm slammed the Tri-State area.

On Long Island, PSEG reported over 2,600 customers were without power as of 8 p.m., with the majority of those outages being reported in Suffolk County.

There were also 2,291 outages reported from Connecticut’s Eversource and over 2,700 outages reported from PSEG New Jersey.

New Jersey’s utility says more than 800 line workers, tree trimmers, surveyors and others will be out working to restore power throughout the night. The company says the storm downed trees, branches and wires particularly in the areas north of I-95.

At 6 p.m., Con Edison reported over 430 outages throughout New York City, with the majority of those reported in Queens. By 8 p.m., that number had dropped to around 300.

Con Ed’s Jamie McShane tells WCBS 880’s Paul Murnane that the company is watching the “gusty winds” very closely, and are bringing in 1,000 out-of-state crew members to help restore power to customers.

“Good news is we have an army of outside contractors who are helping our Con Ed forces, who are prepared to respond whenever and wherever outages occur,” McShane said. “So we're prepared. We've been monitoring this closely since last week. We're as ready as we can be.”

He notes that they will be working around the clock, but only if conditions permit it.

“We can't be going up in a bucket truck in a 50 mile an hour wind. So we need the conditions to be safe for us to make those restorations,” he said. “But we're prepared and we're ready to do so.”

He, like many others on Monday, warned that the winter storm is expected to be a lengthy event and it’s impossible to know when everything can be fully restored as the snow continues to fall.
