SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Spring Valley Village Hall offices were raided on Wednesday afternoon in connection with a deadly fire at an assisted living facility in March.
According to The Journal News, the raid was conducted by the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office just after 2 p.m. in order to “seize documents as part of an ongoing investigation by multiple agencies.”
The outlet reports the raid concluded at around 5 p.m., when agents left with nearly 20 boxes.
The raid was conducted amid reports that village documents regarding the fatal fire at Evergreen Court Home for Adults were suspected to be potential fraudulent.
The deadly fire broke out on Lafayette Street around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23. More than 100 residents were evacuated safely, but one died at a hospital following the fire.
Firefighter Jared Llyod was also killed when he became trapped inside the facility during the blaze. The entire complex was destroyed.
Several days after the fire, officials revealed that the blaze was able to grow so large because the fire department was not alerted by an alarm system, which they say was in “test” mode.
The cause of the fire has yet to be revealed.
In April, officials announced that they would be launching a criminal probe into the fire.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo had also directed the State Department of Health, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, and State Police to assist the Spring Valley Fire and Police Departments and Rockland County Sheriff's Office in the investigation.
