A preliminary investigation determined that a 39-year-old woman exited a vehicle that was stopped in the left lane, and entered the center lane of the roadway on foot.

At the same time, a 55-year-old man was operating a 2008 Freightliner box truck westbound on the Cross Bronx Expressway in the center lane.

The box truck swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the woman, but did make contact with her, knocking her to the pavement, officials said.

EMS responded and transported the woman to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi where she is listed in critical condition with a severe leg injury.

The driver of the box truck remained on scene and did not sustain any injuries.

An investigation in ongoing.
