BOHEMIA, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A man was shot and killed early Wednesday while smoking a cigarette outside his Suffolk County home near an elementary school.
The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the Smithtown Avenue home in Bohemia, where the shooting happened around 6:35 a.m., police told Newsday.
"What we have at this time is, two individuals came into the backyard and fired several rounds at him, striking him one time in the upper part of his body — it looks like it may be around his neck or face area," said Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison.
He added that the gunmen then drove off in a sedan, headed north.
"The unfortunate part is there were family members as well here, who tried to help our victim out, but unfortunately were unable to do much," Harrison said.
Gunfire rang out about a half-mile from the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School.
In a note to parents, Reza Kolahifar, assistant superintendent for administration and personnel at the Connetquot Central School District, said that their security department and police "assured" that the shooting was an "isolated incident" and that there was "no threat to students or staff at Bosti Elementary School."
He added that the "school will open and operate as normal."
