The police officer, Karon Bell, 23, of Newark was charged with one count of criminal sexual contact and taken into custody by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit.

The victim, a 36-year-old woman, made a report with the Kearny Police Department on Dec. 11, 2021 that she was the victim of a sex crime while working as an Uber driver, officials said.

Police said the victim told them she had never met the suspect before and that he allegedly identified himself as a police officer.

Bell, who was off duty at the time, was identified as the suspect after an investigation by the Special Victims Unit. He was released on a summons and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Feb. 25.
