NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Sunday that the state's indoor mask order for schools will end Wednesday, citing a decrease in COVID-19 cases.

"With COVID cases declining by 98% since the Omicron peak and updated @CDCgov guidance in place, we will lift the statewide school mask requirement this coming Wednesday," Hochul tweeted.

The Centers for Disease Control said Friday that Americans who live in low to medium COVID risk areas do not need to wear masks indoors. Most of New York falls into this category.

Staff and students will still have the option to wear masks.

The state announced the end of the outdoor school mask mandate last week, but now those measures will impact all indoor activities as well.

Hochul ended the indoor mask mandate for everything except schools, nursing homes, hospitals and public transit on Feb. 10.

The governor said the administration will continue to monitor infection levels in order to understand if stricter measures are necessary in the future.
