"Proud to endorse @leezeldin for Governor of New York at the @cpnystoday!" Pence tweeted Wednesday, referring to a Conservative Party of New York State event. "He's a Lt Col in the Army Reserve, proud supporter of our police officers, advocate for parents’ rights in education & a fiscal Conservative who will fight for lower taxes, less regulation & more freedom!"
Pence reiterated his support of Zeldin -- who represents It includes the eastern two-thirds of Suffolk County -- on Thursday.
"Great to be with so many Conservatives at the @cpnys yesterday who are paving the way for a historic victory in 5 months, including the next Governor of New York @leezeldin!" Pence tweeted. "You are the anchor that keeps our movement firmly moored to our oldest traditions and highest values!"
Zeldin, endorsed by both the state Republican and Conservative parties, seems to have a leg up in this race against former White House staffer Andrew Giuliani, businessman Harry Wilson and former Westchester Executive Rob Astorino according to polls, fundraisers and endorsements.
GOP lawmakers Rep. Nicole Malliotakis of New York and Rep. Jim Jordan and Ohio have also endorsed Zeldin, 42.
The primary race is still up in the air as Zeldin just got out of the final debate among GOP candidates where he was put under pressure over his record as a state senator and member of Congress.
“Does VP Pence know that Lee Zeldin once touted Andrew Cuomo for president and while in the state senate was a reliable vote for Cuomo? Either way, it will have no effect on the race,” Astorino texted Wednesday, according to the New York Post.
