DEER PARK, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A New York City man was arrested after he stabbed his mother to death at her Long Island home, where he was found “covered in blood” and she was found dead in a kitchen, Suffolk County police said Wednesday.
The 54-year-old victim, who hasn’t been identified, was spotted screaming and running down W. 23rd Street, near Long Island Avenue, in her Deer Park neighborhood before she was killed inside the two-family home where she lived alone on the bottom level, residents said.
Her 33-year-old son, Gabriel Cabral, of Brooklyn, was arrested.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said investigators believe Cabral traveled from Brooklyn to the Deer Park home sometime Tuesday evening.
Police officers from the First Precinct then received a 911 call around 7 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a disturbance on the first floor of the home.
When the officers arrived, Harrison said, “They saw an individual who ended up being our suspect standing on the side of the house covered in blood.”
After Cabral was arrested, police found his mother fatally stabbed several times on the kitchen floor.
“That kitchen area was somewhat ransacked, and a lot of things were destroyed inside that area,” Harrison said, calling the stabbing “a horrific incident.”
The alleged murder weapon—a knife—was found on the ground under the victim's arm, police said.
Police don’t have a potential motive for the killing yet as the investigation continues, Harrison said.
“But we did receive a 911 call that there was a verbal dispute that caused for us to arrive at this location,” the commissioner said.
