STAY COOL IN THE SUBURBS: Where to beat the heat outside NYC

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- As a dangerous heat wave bears down on the Tri-State area, here are some places to stay cool outside of New York City, which is opening 500 cooling centers across the five boroughs (more at NYC.gov/beattheheat or by calling 311.) Many NYC and New York State swimming facilities are also extending pool hours.

LONG ISLAND

The following NY State Park swimming facilities will be open for extended hours:

• On Thursday and Friday, all Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Sunken Meadow fields will remain open to swimming for an additional hour until 8:00 p.m. Heckscher, Hither Hills, Orient Beach and Wildwood will remain open to swimming for an additional hour until 7:00 p.m. Montauk Downs Pool will remain open to swimming for an additional hour until 6:30 p.m.

• On Saturday, swimming hours will remain open to swimming as stated above with the addition of Jones Beach Field 1 remaining open to swimming until 8:00 p.m. and Jones Beach West End 2 remaining open to swimming for an additional hour until 7:00 p.m.

Smithtown Cooling Center

• Smithtown Senior Citizens Department to operate the Senior Citizens Center as a cooling center for residents
• Smithtown beaches, the pool at Landing Country Club and Water Parks will extend hours until 7 p.m. through the heat advisory

Oyster Bay Town Cooling Centers

Cooling centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at:
• Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center – 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage
• Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center – 167 South Broadway, Hicksville

Community pools will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at:
• Marjorie Post Community Park – 451 Unqua Rd., Massapequa
• Syosset-Woodbury Community Park – 7800 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury
• Bethpage Community Park – 1001 Stewart Ave., Bethpage
• Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park – 175 Washington Ave., Plainview
• Tappen Beach – Shore Rd., Glenwood Landing

Town of Huntington Cooling Centers

• Cooling centers: The Dix Hills Ice Rink will be open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the Town of Huntington Senior Center (Flannagan Center) will be open until 4 p.m.
• Beaches: Crab Meadow, West Neck, Hobart, and Centerport Beaches will be open with stationed lifeguards until 8 p.m.
• Pools: The Dix Hills pool will be open to the general public from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday/Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
• Spray Parks: Elwood and Manor Field Spray Parks will be open until 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Spray Parks Open at 10 a.m. for Children with Special Needs)

Hempstead Cooling Centers

NY.gov has a list of dozens of cooling centers in Westchester and beyond.

HUDSON VALLEY

The following NY State Park swimming facilities will be open for extended hours:

• Lake Welch State Park: beach hours extended to 7:00 p.m.
• Rockland Lake State Park: pool hours extended to 6:00 p.m.
• Lake Taghkanic State Park: pool hours extended to 7:00 p.m.
• Franklin Delano Roosevelt State Park: pool hours extended to 7:00 p.m.
• Copake Falls State Park: beach hours extended to 7:00 p.m.

NEW JERSEY

New Jersey has activated cooling centers on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A list of the cooling centers can be found at nj211.org.

CONNECTICUT

Connecticut’s extreme hot weather protocol is in effect through 8 a.m. Sunday. Cooling centers are open throughout Connecticut and can be located by calling 211 or visiting 211ct.org.
