Max Scherzer, as expected, will be the Mets’ Opening Day starter on Thursday.
The league confirmed the news on Friday afternoon, announcing that the Mets ace would get the ball in their season opener against the Marlins in Miami. It will be the seventh time in his Hall of Fame career that Scherzer will get the ball on Opening Day, but his first time with New York.
Justin Verlander was seen as a potential candidate to get the ball to start the new season, but Scherzer was the clear favorite, and he will lead what is currently a shorthanded rotation, with the injury to Jose Quintana, into the 2023 campaign.
