Tommy Hunter will reportedly make the Mets Opening Day roster as his stellar spring training winds down.

According to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, the team told the 36-year-old that he has made the roster for what will be his 16th season in the majors.

Hunter could have opted out of his deal on Saturday if New York didn’t add him to its 40-man roster, but instead, it appears he will be back for a third season with the Mets and start the season out in their bullpen.

Hunter was solid for New York in 2022, posting a 2.42 ERA in 18 appearances, pitching a total of 22.1 innings. He threw just eight innings in his debut season with the Mets in 2021 after back surgery threatened his career.
But Hunter entered Saturday having not allowed a run this spring, and with multiple injuries to the bullpen, most notable Edwin Diaz, Hunter has a role in 2023.
