3M announced this week that it would be eliminating 1,100 jobs at its headquarters as part of its restructuring plan, accounting for nearly 10% of its local workforce, the company told the state.
3M shared its layoff totals in a letter to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, as is required when layoffs reach a certain size.
The letter said the permanent layoffs would impact the company’s “Maplewood Site.”
Last week 3M announced that it would be implementing a cost-cutting plan to restructure the company, and as a result, 6,000 jobs would be cut globally. The layoffs are meant to make the company “stronger, leaner and more focused,” it shared last week.
The layoffs came on top of an additional 2,500 manufacturing jobs being eliminated, the company announced in January.
According to the letter to DEED, none of the positions being terminated are represented by a union, and none of the employees have bumping rights.
Overall the layoffs are expected to represent an estimated $700-900 million in savings for the company, pre-tax.
Layoffs at the company’s headquarters are set to begin this summer on Friday, June 30.
