Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is joining the Hennepin County Attorney's office in the investigation into the officer-involved shooting death of Amir Locke.

County attorney Mike Freeman made the request, which follows partnerships between the two officers in the prosecution and conviction of former police officers Derek Chauvin and Kimberly Potter.

Heading up the county's investigation is Chief Criminal Deputy Daniel Mabley, who's also a retired judge.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is already looking into the Wednesday morning shooting of Locke, with MPD officers' body camera video released Thursday night.

In a statement, Freeman's office said the agencies "will decide together, based on the law and evidence, whether criminal charges should be brought."

The statement, released Friday morning, included a message for Locke's family.

"We want to extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Locke’s family and loved ones during this difficult time," the statement read.

Chauvin was convicted in the death of George Floyd, while Potter was found guilty in the shooting death of Daunte Wright.

Chauvin is serving a 22 1/2-year prison sentence, with Potter's sentencing scheduled for Feb. 18.
