Minnesota's top Democratic executive wants anyone who engages in violent activity banned from the DFL party, and he's backing a by-law that would do just that.

DFL state chair Ken Martin made the post on social media late Saturday after a brawl broke out during a Minneapolis Ward 10 nominating convention earlier in the day.

"Harassment and violence are unacceptable, and we expect candidates and their campaign teams to work hard to curb such behavior when it comes from their supporters, staffers, or volunteers," Martin said in the post.

Martin is planning to call an emergency meeting of the DFL's State Executive Committee to propose the bylaw.

He then wants to take action against those responsible for the chaos that erupted at the Ella Baker Global Studies and Humanities Magnet School in Uptown Minneapolis.

Video posted on social media shows the supporters of Ward 10 seat candidate Nasri Warsame disrupting the meeting by storming the stage at the school's gymnasium.

Warsame is running against incumbent Ward 10 council member Aisha Chughtai, whose supporters had just taken the stage when the chaos started.

Minneapolis police were called but there were no arrests.

One person was hurt and later treated for injuries at HCMC.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the unrest in a social media post.

The convention was stopped and no one was endorsed.

Martin posted an apology, and added that it "was clear" that Warsme's supporters are to blame for the conflict.
