With the Minnesota Legislature completing its work ahead of tonight’s midnight adjournment, lawmakers are looking back on a session that, for the first time in decades, was completely controlled by the Democratic majority.
Republican House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Chad Hartman to discuss the legislative session and why she thinks Minnesotans have been taken for a ride by her fellow lawmakers across the aisle.
“We’ve had a $17.5 billion surplus going into this legislative session. Minnesotans were looking for some of that money to come back to them, and instead, that money is not coming back to them,” Demuth said. “All of us are going to face higher taxes to the tune of over $9 billion higher than it was before.”
Demuth continued, saying that Democrats didn’t think in favor of Minnesotans in their policies this legislative session as they opted to spend the state’s surplus in lieu of giving it back.
“I think we could have offered tax relief to Minnesotans this year,” Demuth said, discussing what she wishes would have been accomplished.
Before midnight tonight, lawmakers are expected to finish work on the health finance and policy bill and the “Keeping Nurses at the Bedside Act,” which would allow nurses to set their own staffing levels.
