It is going to be a very toasty Tuesday across Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. The good news? This is just a one day burst of heat. The bad news? It’s a warmup for what is coming back by the end of the weekend.

Heading out the door Tuesday morning, temps were already heading in the mid-70s and highs Tuesday are expected to reach the upper 90s with head indexes well over 100. The dew point is already of 70 today which is why it feels so tropical.

There is an Excessive Heat Warning through 8 p.m. for all of the metro counties. The heat index could reach up to 105 degrees. There is a Heat Advisory for areas outside of the metro and into Wisconsin. The National Weather Service is warning people to take it easy in this kind of heat.

“Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” says the NWS.

It's hot enough that Minneapolis schools have gone to distance learning on Tuesday for their buildings that aren't air conditioned. Those kids are still in class due to the teachers strike earlier this year.

There is a slight return to more normal temperatures coming Wednesday and for the rest of the week before the heat comes back with a vengeance.

Highs on Saturday creep up to 90 again, but its Sunday and Monday where the real heat kicks in. The National Weather Service is already calling it a “rare and intense heat wave”.

Highs on Sunday are expected to reach triple digits and the forecasted high on Monday is 102. Parts of Minnesota could even see highs of 105 which is extremely rare. The last 100 degree high in the Twin Cities was in 2018. It hasn't happened twice in the same week since 2012, which is also the last time we hit 102, according to the state climatology office.

Almost the entire Midwest and Southwest U.S. are gripped in a dangerous heat wave. Over 100 million Americans from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes are under heat alerts through the middle of the week as temperatures soar toward the triple digits.
