A new food hall, Eat Street Crossing, opens on Saturday morning in South Minneapolis. The former Old Arizona Studios has been renovated and will host several food concepts, a full bar and an event space.

Gabriella Grant-Spangler, who owns Bebe Zito ice cream with her husband and is one of the creators of Eat Street Crossing, told WCCO’s Jason DeRusha what to expect from the space during DeRusha Eats.

“It's a really unique building,” says Grant-Spangler. “Some people may know it as the Old Arizona Building, so it's been home to a lot of really great artistic ventures over the years. But I know for this project in particular, it really transformed into a very special, unique food hall situation in Minneapolis.”

The project was put together by two couples, Grant Spangler and her husband Ben, plus John Ng and Lina Goh from Zen Box Izakaya. Between the two groups, they will own and operate all six of the food spaces.

Bebe Zito will have their ice cream there, plus counter service burgers and fried chicken at BZ burger bar. Of course there is sushi and ramen from the owners of Zen Box.

Then there is Ouro Pizza, a new pizza concept that focuses on Brazilian pizza. And don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of it. Grant-Spangler grew up in Minnesota, but channels her inner-South American roots to bring the southern hemisphere to Minneapolis.

So what is Brazilian pizza?

“It is a style of pizza that kind of, how do I phrase it? It's very topping heavy, so not a lot of sauce, not a lot of cheese, but expect a lot of really unique toppings and a lot of them,” says Grant-Spangler. “The dough is kind of similar to a Neapolitan, but it has more structure to hold all this stuff. And then we are also doing dessert pizzas as well. So they'll pair really nicely with our ice creams.”

Grant-Spangler explained that there wasn’t much in the way of Brazilian food, outside of the meat-heavy Gaucho steak restaurants. She says it was a way to bring some of her home to the Twin Cities.

In addition to the food, you can get beverages at a full bar, and book a mezzanine event space as well.

Eat Street Crossing is at Nicollet Avenue and 28th Street and the doors open Saturday morning at 11:00.
