High school student-athletes prepping for the fall sports season are dealing with the challenges and possible dangers of this week's extreme heat.
When it comes to extreme heat, Minneapolis North football coach Charles Adams says there's an obvious benefit to practicing outdoors, but it's important to keep players safe.
"What we've done this summer with the air quality alerts, just keeping the kids together with us, but moving indoors and that's where you get more of the mental stuff," Adams said. "Obviously you can do the weight room, use the gym, and you can also do some team activities that actually aren't even football related just to keep the kids together."
If the Polars are headed outdoors to practice the next few days, Adams says it will be a walkthrough type of pace.
"We won't have any equipment, we'll just put guys into place, and obviously keep them hydrated. It isn't that serious to be out there in 100 degree weather. There's plenty of things that can be done inside. Anything you can do outside you can kind of do inside."
Minneapolis North is prepping for its first regular season game scheduled for September 1 against Holy Angels. The Polars finished 8-1 in 2022 with their only loss coming in the section semifinal.
"Everybody's ready to get going, especially based off of just how we lost last year," Adams said. "We got a young group that actually got a lot of experience last year and is really hungry to get out there and show what they got. We're in a new class section, and district so we will play some bigger teams. We're looking forward to just going out there and competing. Our expectations are to get to the state tournament and win the Prep Bowl."
