
A Minneapolis man accused of killing a woman and seriously injuring a man in a weekend crash in Robbinsdale is now being held in the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center on probable cause homicide and probable cause fleeing a police officer.
The 20-year-old suspect was released from the hospital and booked into jail on Tuesday morning.
Family, along with police, have identified the woman killed in the crash as Emily Gerding, 34, of Crystal. Her husband John Gerding, 34, remains hospitalized in serious condition at North Memorial Health Hospital.
Both victims were special education teachers at Coon Rapids Middle School.
Police attempted to pull over a Tesla for speeding on 42nd Avenue North in the area of Highway 100 when it sped away. The car collided with the van on 36th Avenue a short time later. According to a the initial press release from the Robbinsdale Police Department, the officer advised that he was not pursuing the vehicle and disengaged from the suspect vehicle.
The Gerdings' two daughters were not in the van at the time of the crash.
The suspect has yet to be formally charged and the Hennepin County Attorney's Office may file an extension.
A GoFundMe for the Gerdings has raised over $117,00.00 as of noon on Tuesday.
