U.S. Senator Tina Smith (D-Minn.) toured Xcel Energy's plant in Becker, Minnesota, on Monday. The plant is in the process of transitioning from coal to renewable energy.
The Becker plant will be the state's largest solar energy plant when the transition is complete, and Smith shared that those in the state that transition to solar power on their own will be the recipients of tax credits thanks to newly passed legislation.
Smith was speaking of the Inflation Reduction Act that was passed through Congress earlier this month, and in the legislation, Americans can get a break for going green.
"Many people are interested in transitioning to a heat pump or an electric hot water heater which is more energy efficient and can save money in the long run. But, they can't afford the upfront cost," Smith said.
She continued saying that with the newly passed legislation, Americans can receive a rebate for making the jump to help with that upfront cost.
When it comes to the benefits of solar energy, Smith says the nice thing about it is that it's free once the infrastructure is in place, and the Inflation Reduction Act is working to make putting the infrastructure in place more affordable for all.
