Hennepin County Sheriff says he's asked for 30 more deputies to help police Minneapolis

County Board would have to approve the added budget

Hennepin County Sheriff Dave Hutchinson says he'd like to add 30 more deputies to his staff.

Hutchinson has asked the Hennepin County Board for the additional hires and he tells WCCO's Chad Hartman that in reality, he could use dozens of more officers.

“We could use hundreds of more deputies,” Hutchinson says. “It’s not going to happen but if I get to 30 that would be good.  It would keep us on pace to help our agencies in the county. Again, we have so much stuff going on.  We have the Vikings, Twins, we have the U of M patrols to help during move-in.”

The Sheriff’s Office budget is proposed to increase from $122.5 million to $127.2 million in 2022, a 3.8% increase.

The board will have to approve the request.

Hutchinson also told Hartman that he doesn’t want the ballot issue on Minneapolis policing to pass, but had strong words for people that think he’s against all change saying, "I think they're full of crap.”
