State Fair Gridlock: Long waits for Metro Transit Riders opening day

Getting to the Minnesota State Fair is a problem this first morning of the “Great Minnesota Get-Together”.

WCCO Radio morning news anchor Steve Simpson has been trying to get to the fairgrounds for about an hour. He’s been waiting at the 46th street station, one of several Metro Transit options for getting to the fair. Riders take the Blue Line Train to that station where they then board an A Line Bus.

The problem is, no buses are showing up and riders are anxiously waiting.

“We’ve been standing here for about 45 minutes with no bus," Simpson explained. "The sign will say the bus is coming in 5-10 minutes, but then it doesn’t. Apparently there is so much gridlock around the fairgrounds, none of the buses can get out, to come pick people up and get back over there.”

Simpson tweeted the issue and Metro Transit replied explaining their traffic issues.

There are several other park and ride lots and options to get to the fair. While there is no specific updates from Metro Transit on the status of other park and rides, if you are heading to the fair you may end up waiting.

In the meantime, Metro Transit is encouraging people to try taking regular routes to fair such as Route 3 from both downtowns, in addition to A Line.

Another option is the C Line from northwest suburbs to downtown Minneapolis, transfer to Green Line, transfer at Snelling Avenue Station to the A Line.

You can sign up for Rider Alerts at metrotransit.org to learn about delays. Go to NexTrip at metrotransit.org to find how to get where you need to go. Here is the link to the regular route information as well.

WCCO Radio News Director Lindsey Peterson also reports seeing people lined up around the block at the County Road 73 (Hopkins Crossroads) and I-394 Park and Ride around 8:30 Thursday morning.

Parking at the Fair was no better, with many visitors to the WCCO Radio Booth telling our staff that just getting there and getting parked too much longer than normal.
