Memorial Day plans across Minnesota could change on Monday with severe weather expected to develop throughout the day.

The National Weather Service released their latest severe weather threat assessment early Monday morning showing northwestern Minnesota was at the greatest risk of seeing severe weather throughout the day. The first line is expected to develop early Monday morning, with another strong system expect in the afternoon.

"There is a chance a few strong, possibly EF2 tornadoes up near Alexandria and northwest of there on Monday," said Paige Marten, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Twin Cities. "I know it's Memorial Day Weekend and people could be camping without access to phones, so it's something to keep in mind."

Marten said strong winds reportedly knocked over trees and blew over a grain bin in Willmar early Monday.

Meanwhile in the Twin Cities on Monday, Marten said discrete supercells could pop-up throughout the day in some areas, but there may be strong lines of thunderstorms that have a significant impact as well.

"The difference between discrete supercells and a line of storms is that the line of storms would mainly bring wind damage," Marten added. "Discrete supercells would bring a higher chance of tornadoes, but those should be isolated."
