The risk of heat-related illness is high this week

Here we go again.

Temperatures are expected to top out in the 90s much of this week, and meteorologists and health officials are warning that precautions should be taken to keep clear of heat-related illness.

Melissa Dye of the National Weather Service says we can’t think of only ourselves when it comes to being prepared for the incoming heat.

“Unfortunately, it is still an issue, especially with more vulnerable populations,” Dye said. “So, children, the elderly, people like that, they really need to make sure they are aware of the conditions that they’re in.”

While the forecast calls for hot temperatures, the dew point projections are in the low 60s, which should keep the heat index lower, so it won’t “feel like” it’s hotter than the thermometer says.

Still, when the temperatures rise, Dye says there are several things to do in order to reduce your risk of injury.

“Make sure that you’re limiting your outdoor activities and taking breaks if you do have to be outside,” Dye said, adding that “staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and [wearing] light clothing” will also help.
