Police video of a controversial traffic stop involving a Minnesota state representative could soon be released.

St. Paul police chief Todd Axtell says the traffic stop involving State Representative John Thompson was not a product of racial profiling, and that the police department will release body cam tape of the stop if Thompson agrees to it.

In a statement, Thompson says he won't stand in the way of the tape's release, noting that if the stop was by the book, then the book should be rewritten.

Police say Thompson was stopped for not having a front license plate.

WCCO political analyst Blois Olson said everything that has come out against the Thompson in this story is not politically fatal for the Democrat.

Appearing on the WCCO Morning News with Sloane Martin, Olson said this controversy could become a problem if it continues to linger, and more information is uncovered about his residential status.

He also points out that Republicans have yet to comment.

Here is the entire statement from The Morning News:

The situation grew even more controversial when Thompson was cited for driving with an expired Wisconsin license, and that he had never received a Minnesota license.

Thompson admitted he should have gotten his Minnesota license long ago, and that the child support issue that led to the license suspension has been resolved.

There are still questions about why Thompson listed his address on the ticket as being in Wisconsin.

He claims that was his previous address.

Representative Thompson is already in hot water with his House colleagues.

An ethics complaint was filed against him after Representative Eric Lucero claims Thompson called him a racist during House debate last month.

Lucero, appearing on the WCCO Morning News, said that violates the House's code of conduct.
