Two more people have entered guilty pleas for the role they played in the $250 million Feeding Our Future scandal that exploited a federally-funded child nutrition program during the COVID-19 pandemic.

U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger announced that 53-year-old Mohamed Hussein and 57-year-old Lul Ali, both of Faribault, admitted to knowingly stealing $5 million from a federally-funded child nutrition program during the pandemic.

The two were responsible for stealing the money from June 2020 to January 2022 after enrolling their companies in the Feed Our Future program.

“After enrolling, Hussein and Ali began submitting fraudulently inflated invoices for reimbursement in which they claimed to be serving meals to thousands of children a day,” a press release from Luger’s office said. “In support of these fraudulent claims, they prepared and submitted fake paperwork, including falsely inflated meal counts.”

In total, Hussein’s company claimed to have served 1.2 million meals to children throughout the pandemic, while Ali’s claimed to serve more than 700,000 meals.

Both have agreed to pay restitution to cover the stolen cash amounting to $5,037,649 and to forfeit to the United States real property and a vehicle.

Sentencing is set for a later date.
